For more than a century, in Sicily, one of the oldest car races in the world takes place: the Targa Florio.
Designed by the historic Sicilian entrepreneur, Vincenzo Florio (1906 - 1977), the Targa Florio is the pride of us Sicilians. In its 105th edition, this sporting event has also become a historical and cultural phenomenon, representing the constancy and perseverance of a Sicilian entrepreneur who made history in Sicily. The legendary competition traditionally took place within the naturalistic context of the Madonie; the traditional track also offers the advantage of enjoying winding and singular roads, which make the competition complex, suitable only for experienced drivers. Among these we can remember Achille Varzi, Tazio Nuvolari, and the legend Nino Vaccarella, who won three editions of the Targa. Even just participating in the race as a spectator, it was an honor reserved for nobles and people of high culture.
Over the years, the race has given the image of a successful Sicily and sporting competition. Targa Florio riders are considered heroes, thanks to their ability to deal with a challenging track to finish. Today the race has a more historical and evocative flavor; the organizers intend to change the routes from edition to edition to discover different beautiful tracks in Sicily. In 2020 the 104th edition took place, between the Baroque landscapes of Noto and Syracuse, giving an unprecedented race closed to the public, given the times. But this does not mean that we will miss the great show that the Targa Florio offers to fans for the forthcoming editions!
